Sustainability

At Kinross Primary School, sustainability is embedded in our school culture and everyday practices. We are committed to developing environmentally responsible students who understand the importance of caring for our planet and contributing positively to their community.

Each term, our Resource Rescuers help to promote sustainable practices across the school, encouraging students to reduce waste and recycle responsibly. Our student leadership program includes two dedicated Year 6 Sustainability Leaders who work alongside our enthusiastic Year 6 Sustainability Team to lead initiatives and inspire others to make environmentally conscious choices.

Students actively participate in a range of recycling programs, including paper and cardboard recycling, and make use of our Recycling Hub, conveniently located outside the library, where members of our school community can recycle a variety of items. Our school also supports worm feeders, helping students learn about composting, reducing food waste and the important role worms play in creating healthy soil.

Our sustainability initiatives also include a thriving school vegetable garden program, where students have opportunities to plant, care for and harvest produce while learning about food production and sustainable gardening practices. To help close the loop on recycling, students participate in composting programs that divert food scraps from landfill and return valuable nutrients back to our gardens. Together with our worm farm, these programs provide authentic, hands-on learning experiences that demonstrate how organic waste can be transformed into rich soil to support healthy plant growth and a more sustainable future.

Sustainability learning extends into classrooms through a variety of projects and hands-on activities across year levels. Students engage in meaningful sustainability initiatives both within the school and in partnership with our local community, fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment around them.

Through leadership opportunities, practical experiences and community partnerships, Kinross Primary School empowers students to become informed, active and responsible stewards of the environment.
